Turnips contribute to seed mixes through rapid establishment and shallow-to-moderate rooting, allowing them to exploit surface nutrients quickly. Compared with deeper-rooted brassicas such as kale and swede, turnips mature faster and capture nitrogen earlier in the season, reducing short-term nutrient losses. In mixed swards, turnips complement deeper-rooted species by occupying the upper soil profile and providing quick ground cover and early feed.
